People who search for rug dry cleaning usually mean one of two things: they want their rug cleaned without it being soaked, or they're picturing dropping it at the dry cleaner's like a winter coat. What the plant model actually costs you
The traditional route is a wash plant. Your rug rides off in a truck, gets submerged in a wash pit or run through an automated line, spends time in a drying room, and comes home in two or three weeks. You pay for pickup, delivery, and everything in between, and the whole process happens where you can't see it. For a handful of situations that's the right call, but as the default way to maintain a rug, it's a lot of handling, a lot of risk, and a lot of time spent staring at the bare rectangle where your rug used to be.
The other direction people try is the actual dry cleaner on the corner. Some will accept a small rug and run it with garment solvent. Those machines and chemistries were designed for suits and dresses. Tumbling is rough on rug construction, solvents can attack latex backings, and nothing about the process addresses the ground-in grit that makes a rug dirty in the first place.
Every risk in rug cleaning scales with how much water goes in and how long it stays. So we put in very little and take it back out in the same pass.
What soaking does to a rug
Start with what a full soak means physically. A saturated 9x12 wool rug is holding gallons of water and can weigh several hundred pounds. Every risk that matters in rug cleaning gets worse from there, and they all trace back to two variables: how much water went in, and how long it stayed.
Water reaching the backing is risk number one. Tufted rugs are held together by a layer of latex adhesive between the face and the backing cloth. Repeated saturation breaks latex down. It turns gummy, it can delaminate, and degrading latex is the source of that sour rubber smell some rugs develop after a wash.
Dyes are risk number two. Most rug dyes are stable when damp for minutes. Keep them saturated for hours and you've given loose dye time to travel, which is how red medallions grow pink shadows into an ivory field. The damage comes from the dwell time more than the water itself.
Drying is risk number three, and it compounds the other two. A soaked rug dries from the outside in, over days. That slow, damp middle is exactly the window where mildew establishes, cotton foundations brown, and odors set. A rug that's dry in an hour never opens that window at all.

Low moisture, carbonation, one hour

The carbonation does the mechanical work a flood of water would otherwise do: millions of small bubbles loosen embedded soil and float it to the surface of the pile, where extraction captures it along with the moisture, in the same pass.
Soap-free matters more than it sounds. Detergent-based cleaning has to rinse, and rinsing is where the water volume comes from. A solution that leaves nothing sticky behind doesn't need a rinse cycle, which is why we can clean thoroughly at moisture levels a wash plant would consider a light misting.

Frequently asked questions
Is it literally dry cleaning, with no water at all?
No, and any rug process advertised as completely waterless is either a powder sprinkle or wordplay. Ours is low-moisture: a carbonated solution applied lightly and extracted immediately. The rug is damp to the touch for about an hour, which is a different world from the days a soaked rug spends drying.
Is this the same thing my dry cleaner does to clothes?
No. Garment dry cleaning uses chemical solvents in a tumbling machine, which suits fabrics that can't touch water but is wrong for rug construction and does little for ground-in grit. Our method uses controlled moisture and extraction, designed for a textile that lives on the floor and eats foot traffic.
Is a full immersion wash ever the right choice?
Honestly, yes, occasionally. A rug that's been through a flood, or one saturated with contamination through to the foundation, can need a full wash and controlled drying. That's not a service we offer, and if your rug is in that condition we'll say so at the walkthrough instead of running our process over a problem it can't solve.
